How to check your Nissan Leaf's battery health
The Leaf is the EV most worth checking, and the hardest one to check casually. It is the only mass-market EV sold in the UK with a passively air-cooled pack, with no liquid thermal management, so its batteries are more sensitive to heat, to frequent rapid charging and to sitting at high states of charge than almost anything else on the road. Two Leafs of the same year and mileage can be several percent apart.
It is also the model where the dashboard tells you the least. There is no state-of-health percentage anywhere in the car's menus. The twelve capacity bars beside the charge gauge are the only built-in indicator, and they are far coarser than most owners assume: you can lose roughly a seventh of your battery before the first one disappears.
The good news is that the Leaf's battery management system reports its own state of health precisely, and it costs about £15 of hardware and ten minutes to read it. This page covers all three routes, what the numbers actually mean, and how to tell whether your figure is normal.
How to get the figure
LeafSpy + an OBD-II adapter
The definitive answer. Reads the battery management system's own state-of-health figure, the same number a dealer's kit reports.
- Buy a Bluetooth OBD-II adapter. LeafSpy is fussier than most apps about adapters, so check the app's own compatibility list before ordering, and prefer a known-good BLE adapter over the cheapest ELM327 clone, which frequently will not connect.
- Install LeafSpy Lite (enough for a state-of-health reading) or LeafSpy Pro (adds logging and cell-level detail). Both are available for Android and iOS.
- Plug the adapter into the OBD-II port, which on the Leaf sits under the dashboard on the driver's side, above the pedals.
- Switch the car on (fully ready, not just accessory) and pair the adapter in your phone's Bluetooth settings, then select it in LeafSpy's connection settings.
- Read SOH on the main screen. Note AHr and Hx alongside it; they are worth recording.
Worth knowing: Read it when the pack is neither hot nor freshly rapid-charged. After a long motorway run or a rapid charge, the figure can drift by a percent or two before settling. A reading taken cold, a few hours after driving, is the one to trust.
The dashboard capacity bars
No hardware, no app, but coarse. Useful as a sanity check or a first look at a car you are viewing.
- Look at the right-hand side of the instrument cluster, outboard of the blue charge-level gauge.
- Count the small bars in the outer column. A healthy Leaf shows twelve.
- Convert roughly: losing the first bar corresponds to somewhere around 15% capacity loss, and each bar after that is worth roughly 6-7%.
Worth knowing: This is a very blunt instrument. A car that has just lost its first bar and a car about to lose it can be most of a bar apart in real capacity while both display eleven. Treat a bar count as a range, never as a measurement, and never as a basis for a price negotiation on its own.
A Nissan dealer or EV specialist battery report
Costs money and a booking, but produces a printed figure from the same BMS data, which is useful evidence when selling.
- Book an EV or battery health check with a Nissan dealer or an EV-specialist independent.
- Ask specifically for the state-of-health figure and the printout, not just a pass/fail.
- Keep the report; a documented figure is worth real money on a private sale.
Worth knowing: The underlying number is the same one LeafSpy reads. You are paying for the printout, the third-party name on it, and the fact that a buyer did not have to take your word for it.
What the numbers mean
- SOH
- State of health as a percentage of the pack's original capacity. This is the headline figure and the one to enter on a check.
- AHr
- The pack's measured capacity in amp-hours. It falls as the battery ages and is what the SOH percentage is calculated from, so it moves in step with it.
- Hx
- A conductance figure, which roughly reflects the pack's internal resistance and its ability to deliver power rather than store energy. It is noisier than SOH and often reads lower; a low Hx alongside a healthy SOH is common and not usually a cause for alarm on its own.
- QC / L1-L2
- Lifetime counts of rapid (CHAdeMO) and slow charges. A high rapid-charge count relative to age is context for a lower SOH, and something a buyer will reasonably ask about.
Why Leaf packs age the way they do
Without liquid cooling, the pack's temperature follows ambient heat and its own charging losses. Sustained heat is what degrades lithium-ion cells fastest, so climate and charging habits matter more on a Leaf than on a liquid-cooled rival. Repeated CHAdeMO rapid charging, particularly several in a day (which is where the 40 kWh car's well-documented charge-rate throttling comes from), accumulates more heat than home charging ever will. A Leaf that has spent its life on a home charger in the UK climate is in about the gentlest environment the design sees.
Which pack you have
The 24 kWh car ran from 2011 to 2017 and is the one where degradation is most visible today, particularly the earliest cars. The 30 kWh (2016-2017) had its own early-life capacity-reporting issues that Nissan addressed under software campaigns. The 40 kWh arrived in 2018 and the 62 kWh e+ in 2019; both use a different, more durable cell than the early cars, and both hold up considerably better. Comparing a 2013 car against a 2019 one tells you almost nothing; age and pack generation have to be matched.
The warranty threshold
Nissan's battery capacity warranty covers loss below nine of the twelve capacity bars within 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Nine bars corresponds to roughly 70% of original capacity, which is also the threshold most of the industry treats as end of useful automotive life. If you are close to it and still inside the term, get the figure documented by a dealer promptly.

What is a normal state of health for a Nissan Leaf?
It depends heavily on the pack generation, not just age. Early 24 kWh cars commonly sit well below what a same-age liquid-cooled EV would show, while 40 kWh and 62 kWh cars generally hold up much better. Rather than quote a single number, run a check. The report compares your figure against other Leafs of the same age and similar mileage, and tells you the size of the sample it used.
Does LeafSpy work on the Ariya?
No. LeafSpy is written for the Leaf's battery management system. For the Ariya, use a general EV scanner app such as Car Scanner with the correct vehicle profile, or ask a dealer.
Will plugging in an OBD adapter harm my car or void anything?
Reading data over OBD-II is passive and is what the port exists for. The practical advice is to unplug the adapter when you are not using it, because some cheap adapters draw current continuously and can flatten the 12V battery over weeks.
My SOH dropped several percent in a week. Is the battery failing?
Almost certainly not. The BMS re-estimates capacity continuously and the figure wanders with temperature, recent charging and how long since the pack was last balanced. Judge the trend across months, not individual readings, which is exactly what recording each reading against the same VIN gives you.
Is a low Hx a problem if my SOH is fine?
Usually not on its own. Hx tracks internal resistance rather than capacity and is considerably noisier. Persistent, steep decline in both figures together is the pattern worth investigating.
